Another year comes to an end ...

It’s hard to believe that the year has come and is almost gone. It seems like only yesterday that we were still in the cold days of winter. As we come to December, it’s always a good opportunity to take stock of the past year.

After surviving the vagaries of the stock market, the spiking in the price of oil, civil riots and the real and destructive effects of the 2015/2016 drought and flash floods, it is clear that we live in a world loaded with risk. This is what makes our industry is so important to society, and I am so proud to be a part of it.

As I look back at the year on the IIKZN calendar, I am honoured to have been involved in the events that have taken place. Educational workshops aligned with the curriculum of both Milpark and Unisa; well-supported sporting events allowing for comradeship between competitors; supporting the development of our young guns of the industry at the U35’s Nibble and Network and social networking at its finest at the annual IIKZN Gala Dinner.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members for their support over the year; we hope that we have added value to your careers.

If you are taking leave over the festive season, please travel safe and enjoy the well-deserved rest.

Thanks and regards,

Candice Murie

Education News

It has certainly been one of our busiest months ever. From the Education Awards Function to the Gala Dinner, what an awesome experience.

The Annual Education Awards Function was held as a high tea event at the Westville Country Club on 2 November 2016. The function was attended by a total of 60 members, being award recipients, sponsors, supporters and family members of some of the award recipients. The education team worked tirelessly in putting this event together, and their efforts genuinely paid off following the absolute success of the event.

Out of the 42 members that obtained distinctions in the various subject modules, 16 were presented with a certificate of recognition for the second highest distinction and 18 candidates were presented with a glass trophy and a R2 000 monetary cash prize for the highest distinction per subject module. These awards were sponsored by individual sponsors per subject module. We wish to sincerely thank the following award sponsors for their ongoing support of the IIKZN, especially towards Education in making it possible for us to recognise the efforts of our members in developing themselves to professionalise our industry: Hypersure Insurance Brokers, MUA Insurance Acceptances, Mutual & Federal, Steve Slatter Insurance Brokers, Zurich Insurance Company, Compendium Insurance Brokers, AIG, Rajin Chetty Financial Services, Invuya Institute of Learning, SHA Specialist Underwriters, Shaun Pillay & Associates, M&W Insurance Brokers, Scottfin Insurance Brokers, Hollard, CIA, RSR Brokers, Santam and FIA Durban.

Our gratitude also goes out to our cash sponsors: Norton Rose Fulbright, Allianz, North Coast Insurance Brokers, Integrity Software Solutions, Pat Smythe, Independent Insurance Brokers and Cuppan Insurance Consultants. AIG action cricket

This very popular event took place at the Action Arena Centre in Durban North on the 21 October 2016.

Six teams took part and, from the report backs received, everyone had a great time with the eventual winners (after some extremely hard-fought tussles) being the team from COMPENDIUM INSURANCE BROKERS. Coming second was AIG SA, followed by GARRUN GROUP.

Once again a BIG THANK YOU must go to AIG SA for their generous sponsorship and I have no doubt this event will only get bigger and better next time.

A big thank must go to Mutual & Federal who once again made the evening great fun and provided very nice prizes – including a superb meal. This is one of the longer standing institute events, having originally been started by the Protea Insurance, and just gets better every year.

This ever-popular event was held on the 27 October 2016 and a great time was had by all, with some very competitive bowling taking place. The top three finishers were:

A number of members have advised that they are not receiving the newsletter. After some investigating we have established that the main reasons for not receiving the emails are as follows:

  • Spam Filter – This would be due to the email appearing in the users junk mail.
  • Block List – Often if people receive marketing mailers, they may opt to unsubscribe, if they do this, they are automatically added to a ‘Block List’. As long as an email appears in the list, no matter how many times it is added to the distribution list, it will not send to the recipient.
  • Please check to see that the emails are not in either the Spam Filter or Block List.
